1.0 out of 5 stars Good Form, Bad Function, April 22, 2009

Ok... let me preface this rant by explaining that I'm a graphic designer and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE good design. I will give praise to any well-designed object that seamlessly combines form and function.

These bowls are deceiving, overpriced, and of horrible quality.

I love to cook, and by now I know what products will last in my kitchen and what won't. I was so ecstatic when these bowls arrived in the mail... until I opened it. Part of it was my fault- I didn't read the description thoroughly and immediately expected a $50 set of bowls and gadgets to also be perfectly functional and to last me a lifetime- made out of melamine, or something much more durable than cheap plastic (think $5 set of bowls from Wal-Mart) that can't be microwaved. The small wire sieve is all plastic, and the mesh is made out of something like fishing wire! I was expecting metal, instead of a material that would stretch and tear after one use. I returned it the next day. Go to Williams... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars All style, no substance, October 31, 2009

From reading the reviews, I knew that the sieve would be flimsy but the rest of the set was supposed to be dishwasher-safe. I put the small green bowl in the top rack of my dishwasher but the colander only fit in the bottom rack; the bowl is fine, but the colander is now noticeably warped on one side. (Incidentally, I have a set of nesting bowls I bought from Ikea a decade ago and they still look great, despite having gone through the dishwasher countless times. And they only cost a tenth of this set.)

The other issue is one I didn't discover until I tried using the measuring cups for the first time. When I'm baking, I like to run a knife across the top of the measuring cup to make sure I'm measuring ingredients as precisely as possible. That's only doable with the smallest measuring cups because the others are countersunk, so that the handles allow them to nest properly in the set.

The set looked gorgeous when I first took it out of the box, but it turned... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars looks good but not practical, January 11, 2010

This review is from: Joseph Joseph 8-Piece Food Preparation Nesting Set (Kitchen)
I was given this attractive set and I really love the concept. It contains everything I need for cooking - small and large mixing bowls (the smaller one also has measuring marks) 2 kinds of strainers and a set of measuring cups. Because space is very limited in our house I love the way they stack up. However, the first thing my husband did was to strain pasta through the nylon sieve and so it shrank meaning that nothing stacked up nicely any more. Because I need the bigger items far more often then the measuring cups, the cups just ended up getting in the way. I would have loved the option of hanging them but the smallest cup does not have a loop in the handle like the other cups do. I ended up putting them in the toy box.
The other thing that really bothers me is that none of it is microwavable.
I think it is a very beautiful looking set but I wish they had put a little more thought into the functional aspect.
